Tragedy Strikes in Lewiston, Maine: A Community in Shock
Lewiston, Maine, found itself at the center of a horrifying event on Wednesday night when a mass shooting occurred at two separate locations. At least 22 people lost their lives, and 30 more were left injured, in what has left the community reeling.
Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck addressed the media during a press conference on Wednesday night, though he refrained from disclosing the precise number of victims at that time. Sauschuck emphasized the fluidity of the situation, underlining the need for patience and understanding during these challenging times.
The alleged shooter, Robert Card, a trained firearms instructor believed to be associated with the Army Reserve stationed in Saco, Maine, has become the focal point of the investigation. According to a law enforcement bulletin shared with the public, Card had recently reported experiencing significant mental health issues, including hearing voices and making threats to harm individuals at the National Guard Base in Saco. Disturbingly, Card had been committed to a mental health facility for a two-week period over the summer but was subsequently released. Authorities have labeled him as "armed and dangerous," urging the public to remain vigilant.
In a shocking turn of events, a "vehicle of interest" linked to Card was discovered in Lisbon, Maine. State police are now seeking the assistance of the public in locating the suspect, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Central Maine Medical Center issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation, describing it as a "mass casualty, mass shooter event." Regrettably, they were unable to provide an accurate count of the number of victims affected by this senseless tragedy.
Images shared by the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office reveal a picture of the suspect, Card, wearing a brown sweatshirt and clutching a rifle, a haunting image that has left many shaken.
As the events unfolded, residents of Lewiston were advised to "shelter in place" and "stay inside your home with the doors locked" for their safety.
The response to this horrific incident has been swift and comprehensive. The FBI Boston Division released a statement indicating their coordination with local and state law enforcement agencies: "The FBI Boston Division continues to coordinate with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in Maine, and we stand ready to assist with any available resources they need, including evidence response, investigative and tactical support, as well as victim assistance." They further urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to law enforcement immediately.
In the latest developments, increased law enforcement activity has been observed at Robert Card's property in Bowdoin, Maine. Active FBI and state police presence on the scene has added to the growing law enforcement response. Property records confirm Card's association with the house in Bowdoin.
As of Thursday afternoon, Robert Card remains at large, and an extensive manhunt is underway. Authorities suspect that he may have fled the area by boat after taking his vehicle to a local boat ramp.
The people of Lewiston, Maine, and the nation as a whole are left in shock and mourning as they grapple with the magnitude of this tragedy. The search for answers continues, as does the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.
